A lost treasure is waiting to be rediscovered
Deep within the walls of Palanga’s former “Naglis” cinema lies a hidden masterpiece: the monumental sgraffito panel “Neringa and Naglis.” Created in 1959 by artist Jonas Jukonis, this stunning work depicts the seaside legend of giants, stylized waves, and fishing boats. For decades, it was lost under layers of paint, but now, it’s ready to be brought back to life.
The challenge: A single photograph is not enough
As the historic cinema is transformed into the new “Naglis” Regional Film Library, a major restoration event is underway to save this significant piece of Lithuanian modernism. The problem? Only one known photograph of the original panel exists. To restore it to its authentic glory, we need more.
This is where you come in. We are launching a public call to action—a treasure hunt through time. We believe the missing pieces of this puzzle are hidden in your family albums, old slides, and personal archives.
How you can be part of the event
The Lithuanian Film Centre is calling on everyone to search their collections for old photographs of the Palanga “Naglis” cinema, especially any shots of the lobby or interior that might show the panel. Even a small, blurry glimpse could be the crucial detail restorers need.
If you find a photo or know someone who might have one, you can become a key player in this incredible cultural event. Help us piece together history and ensure this legend greets visitors for generations to come.
